N95 vs KN95: Which One Should You Actually Wear?

N95 and KN95 set the same filtration bar — at least 95% at the most-penetrating particle size. The difference is which country certified the mask, and far more consequentially, how it attaches to your head. Headbands pull evenly from behind; ear loops pull from two side points and are more prone to gapping. The difference between an N95 and a KN95 is not how well they filter. Both are rated to capture at least 95% of airborne particles at the hardest particle size to catch, and on paper their filtration requirements land in the same place. The difference is which country's standard the mask was tested against — N95 is the American designation under NIOSH, KN95 is the Chinese one under GB2626-2019 — and, far more consequentially for you, how the mask attaches to your head.

That second part is where the real decision lives. A mask only delivers its rating if air is forced through the filter rather than around it, and the two standards take different approaches to making that happen. Here is what actually separates them, and how to pick.

What Is the Actual Difference Between N95 and KN95?

They are two national certifications for the same class of product — a filtering facepiece respirator — written by different regulators for their own markets.

The filtration line in that table is the one most people focus on, and it is the least interesting. Both standards set the same 95% bar. If you are choosing between a genuine N95 and a genuine KN95 purely on filter media performance, you are choosing between two things the regulators consider equivalent.

💡The Rating Describes the Material, Not Your Face

A 95% rating is measured on a test rig where all the air is pulled through the filter. On a real face, air takes whichever path is easiest. If there is a gap at your cheek, that is the easy path — and the rating on the box stops describing what you are breathing.

Why Headbands Beat Ear Loops for Seal

This is the practical difference that matters most, and it is mechanical rather than regulatory. Headbands wrap behind the head and pull the mask straight back against the face, distributing tension evenly around the whole perimeter. Ear loops pull from two points at the sides, which tends to press the mask firmly against the cheeks near the ears while leaving the areas above and below those anchor points with less pressure.

The result is that ear-loop masks are more prone to gapping along the sides of the nose and under the chin — exactly the places where a leak defeats the filter. That is not a claim that ear loops cannot seal; it is a statement about which design has more margin for error on an average face.

It also explains a common experience: someone tries a KN95, finds it uncomfortable behind the ears, loosens it or lets it sag, and ends up with a 95%-rated mask delivering considerably less. Comfort and seal are not separate problems. A mask you keep adjusting is a mask that is not sealed.

Is a KN95 as Good as an N95?

For the filter media, the standards ask for the same thing. The honest differences are in verification and in fit:

  • Verification is easier for N95. NIOSH maintains a public list of approved respirators, so you can check a specific model against it. There is no equivalent public US registry for KN95 models, which puts more of the burden on the seller's documentation.
  • Counterfeits are a real problem on both sides, but the lack of a lookup makes KN95 harder to check independently.
  • Fit favors headbands, for the mechanical reasons above — though a well-designed ear-loop mask with a structured nose bridge can close much of that gap.
  • Availability and comfort favor KN95 for daily consumer wear. Headband respirators are harder to put on and take off repeatedly through a day.

So "is a KN95 as good as an N95" resolves into a different question: can you confirm this particular mask is what it claims to be, and does it seal on your face? Those two questions matter more than the letter in front of the 95.

How Do You Tell If a KN95 Is Genuine?

  • The mask itself should be printed with the standard it was tested to — GB2626-2019 — along with a manufacturer name or brand
  • The manufacturer should be identifiable, with a real address and a product page, not just a marketplace listing
  • A seller should be able to produce a test report on request, naming the testing laboratory and the standard
  • Packaging that lists no standard at all, or lists a standard that does not exist, is the clearest signal to walk away

A useful habit: buy the same model twice from the same source and compare them. Counterfeit supply chains are inconsistent, and two units that differ noticeably in weight, print quality, or nose-wire stiffness are worth questioning.

Where Does ASTM F3502-21 Fit In?

There is a third standard that rarely appears in the N95-versus-KN95 comparison, and it was written for a different purpose. ASTM F3502-21 is an American standard for barrier face coverings, and unlike the two respirator standards it tests two things together: how much the mask filters, and how hard it is to breathe through. Both are reported, so a product cannot quietly buy filtration performance by making the mask harder to breathe through.

That combination is aimed squarely at masks people wear for hours at a time by choice rather than by workplace requirement. 💡Three Standards, Three Questions

NIOSH N95 answers "does this meet the US workplace respirator bar?" GB2626-2019 KN95 answers "does this meet the Chinese respirator bar?" ASTM F3502-21 answers "does this filter well AND breathe well enough to wear all day?" They are not ranked against each other — they answer different questions.

Which Should You Actually Buy?

  • If your workplace requires respiratory protection, that decision is not yours to make — follow the program, which will normally specify NIOSH-approved N95s and include fit testing.
  • If you want the highest-confidence seal for a short, high-exposure window, a headband N95 from a model you can check against the NIOSH list is the straightforward answer.
  • If you are wearing a mask for hours across a normal day — commuting, travel, poor outdoor air — the standard that describes that use case is ASTM F3502-21, because it reports breathability alongside filtration.
  • If you are buying KN95 for cost, buy from a source that can produce a test report, and check the seal yourself rather than trusting the number on the box.

How Do You Check the Seal?

Whichever you buy, the check takes five seconds and needs no equipment. Put the mask on, cover the front with both hands, and inhale sharply. The mask should draw inward against your face and hold. If it does not move, or you feel air slipping in at the nose or cheeks, the seal has failed — and at that point the difference between N95 and KN95 is academic.
